Rising Stars: Benji G.

With PRs of 2:17 in the 800m, 4:57 in the 1600m, and an 18:52 5k, Benji is a competitor who thrives on both speed and grit. His favorite season is cross country—big meets, team energy, and the thrill of racing side by side with friends make it extra special. Benji is currently an 8th grade student, competing in the 13-14 division for cross country.

Benji’s proudest moment so far? Earning All-American honors at the 2024 USATF Cross Country Championships, along with setting his district 1600m record as a 7th grader. Looking ahead, his goals are just as ambitious: qualify for Nike Outdoor Nationals and keep climbing the national ranks.

What makes Benji strong is his ability to “embrace the suck”—digging deep and pushing through the pain of training and racing. But it’s not just about the grind. He loves the family atmosphere of the team, the nerves and adrenaline before the gun goes off, and the friendships that make running unforgettable. One of his favorite memories is playing hide-and-seek at regionals, a perfect example of how he and his teammates balance fun and focus.

Beyond running, Benji is just as at home in the pool or on the slopes, with swimming and skiing rounding out his athletic life. He’s also a big fan of Snooze French toast after a race, and you’ll probably catch him sporting his go-to flamingo tights on race day.

His advice for new runners? Set both realistic and stretch goals, don’t be too hard on yourself if things don’t click right away, and keep working until they do. Most importantly—enjoy the journey. For Benji, running is more than a sport; it’s a challenge, a community, and a family he always comes back to.
