Winter running can be an incredible experience for kids! From the crunch of snow underfoot to the refreshing crisp air, it’s a season that adds a touch of adventure to their running routine. However, running in cold weather also comes with unique challenges. With the right preparation and mindset, kids can enjoy winter running safely and comfortably. Here’s how:
1. Layer Up Wisely
Why it’s important: Keeps kids warm without overheating.
Start with a moisture-wicking base layer: This pulls sweat away from the skin, keeping them dry.
Add an insulating layer: Fleece or lightweight wool works well to trap warmth.
Top it off with a weatherproof layer: A windproof, water-resistant jacket protects against the elements.
Avoid cotton, as it absorbs moisture and can leave kids feeling cold.
💡 Tip: Encourage kids to dress as if it’s 10–15°F warmer than the actual temperature since running warms the body. But make sure they have layers for the real feel temperature because they can always lose the layers throughout practice once they get warm!
2. Don’t Forget Extremities
Why it’s important: Fingers, toes, and ears are vulnerable to the cold.
Hat or headband: Choose something snug to cover their ears.
Gloves or mittens: Mittens are often warmer, but gloves give more mobility.
Warm socks: Opt for wool or synthetic materials to keep toes toasty.
💡 Tip: Make sure shoes aren’t too tight with thick socks, as restricted circulation can make feet colder.
3. Stay Visible
Why it’s important: Winter days are shorter, and visibility can be low.
Choose bright, reflective clothing to ensure kids are seen.
Add a headlamp or clip-on blinking light for runs in low-light conditions.
💡 Tip: Snow and ice can reflect light, so even daytime runs benefit from reflective gear.
4. Hydrate Like It’s Summer
Why it’s important: Cold weather masks thirst, but hydration is still essential.
Encourage kids to drink water before and after runs, even if they don’t feel thirsty.
Warm herbal teas or electrolyte drinks are fun options for post-run hydration.
💡 Tip: Avoid icy-cold drinks before running to prevent chills.
5. Keep It Fun
Why it’s important: Keeps kids motivated to run, even in chilly weather.
Celebrate post-run with hot cocoa or a cozy blanket.
Track their winter miles and offer rewards for hitting milestones (at Elevated we LOVE to keep track of goals and always provide a goal sheet for kids at the beginning of each season).
💡 Tip: Consider winter races to keep up the motivation - the Ugly Sweater Run and Pancake Run are our Elevated Distance Training Team favorites for celebrating winter running with delicious treats!
Here at Elevated, we believe that winter running is awesome. Winter running is especially good at building mental toughness and the work done in the winter helps set the stage for the spring track season and fall cross country season.
So bundle up, embrace the cold, and consider joining us for those amazing winter miles!
